San Diego Padres Memories
I have been a lifelong San Diego Padres fan and have lived with the good times and the down times with a team that is celebrating its 40th anniversary as a major league team in 2009... My father took me to my first baseball game in 1969; the Padres played the Dodgers and lost, something that was common during the first year, but I became a Padres fan forever... Another thing I remember from those early days as a fan is the Padres shortstop’s name which is forever etched in my brain... As the Padres took the field the Public Address Announcer introduced the Padre players as the enter the playing field and when he got to the shortstop position I heard “Number 11, Enzooooooo Hernándezzzzz ” and his name has stayed with me ever since... You'd think I'd choose a better player to have stuck in my mind, like Tony Gywnn or Randy Jones... Enzo Hernández was the typical "good field-no hit" shortstop who, during his eight-season career, was a .224 hitter with two home runs, 113 RBI, 241 runs, 522 hits, 66 doubles, 13 triples, and 129 stolen bases in 714 games played. His first year with the Padres he was a Triple Crown loser, finishing last in the three Triple Crown statistics, with a .222 BA, 0 HR, and 12 RBI. Yikes..! I currently work for the Padres as a Ballpark Navigator, aka, tour guide; I show people PETCO Park year around... I tell them about PETCO Park’s unique features, the Padres history, visit the playing field, press box, suites, and on occasion the player’s clubhouses... I will add my comments to the section of my blog regarding my tours, my feeling about the current Padres season and other things Padres related... PETCO Park- A Good Baseball Value
There is a great baseball value for baseball fans attending San Diego Padres games at PETCO Park... With the $5 Park Pass, that allows you to watch the game throughout the ballpark, when combined with the "5 for 5 Deal" where for $5 you get a Hot Dog, Popcorn, Peanuts, 2oz Cookie and 22oz Soda, $10 you can have something to eat and watch 2 plus hours baseball entertainment... Since moving to PETCO Park in 2004 the Padres have finished 1st twice and 2nd once in their division... Unfortunetly, 2008 was the year that the owner John Moores' wife Becky filed for divorce and with 100s of millions of dollars at stake the Padres were caught in their "divorce" cross hairs... This tied GM Kevin Towers and the other front office management's hands when it came to spending money plus it put a "dark cloud" over the entire organization, players included... With a new ownership group taking control of the Padres in 2009 the future looks bright for us Padres fans... Feedback: PETCO Park - A Good Baseball Value Added: April 12, 2009 Comments: 0 |
